Warren Demands Testimony Over AI Chip Export Loophole
Senator Elizabeth Warren called for Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to testify after a regulatory failure allegedly allowed advanced AI chips to reach Chinese firms.
Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Andy Kim criticized the Trump administration for a regulatory loophole that may have enabled advanced American AI chips to be exported to overseas units of Chinese firms. Warren asserted that a failure to update export control regulations over the previous 18 months potentially fueled the military capabilities of China.
In response to the vulnerability, the United States Department of Commerce issued guidance on May 31, 2026, to close the loophole. The guidance follows concerns regarding the management of the Bureau of Industry and Security and its implications for national security.
Warren and Kim are now demanding that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick testify before the Senate Banking Committee. They seek an explanation for the alleged mismanagement of export controls and the resulting risks to the United States.
