Ireland Data Centers Consume 22 Percent of National Electricity

Ireland is facing a grid stability crisis as data centers now consume 22 percent of the nation's electricity, a rate far exceeding the European Union average of 2-3 percent. The national grid operator, EirGrid, projects this demand will rise to 30 percent by 2030, driven largely by the acceleration of artificial intelligence.

The Government of Ireland has pledged to publish a new strategy and update the electrical grid within five years to manage the surge. This response follows pressure from local authorities, such as those in Dublin who recently blocked a Google development, and environmental groups. Friends of the Earth argues the growth is unsustainable and threatens EU 2030 climate targets.

Industry leaders warn that the current power and planning blockages jeopardize Ireland's standing in cloud computing. Maurice Mortell of Digital Infrastructure Ireland noted that while 18 billion euros in investment exists, another 5.8 billion euros in planned projects could be marooned without adequate power capacity.
