Political reactions have focused on cost and regulation. Senator Bernie Sanders and governors in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland have criticized the rising costs for consumers. In response to the crisis, Senator Tom Cotton proposed the DATA Act, which would exempt in-house utilities from federal regulatory requirements. The legislation aims to incentivize decentralized energy production by allowing companies to build their own generators and power lines, reducing the burden on centralized utility infrastructure.
