Jio Platforms Seeks U.S. Partnerships for Wireless Broadband Technology
Jio Platforms is negotiating with Comcast and Charter Communications to license its wireless broadband technology in exchange for equity stakes in the U.S. market.
Jio Platforms, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, is negotiating with U.S. cable giants Comcast and Charter Communications to license its proprietary unlicensed band radio (UBR) technology. In exchange for the licensing rights, Jio is seeking equity stakes in these companies.
The UBR technology utilizes free Wi-Fi frequencies to provide high-speed internet without the need for physical cable connections, offering a cheaper alternative to traditional fiber or cable networks. This move is part of a broader strategy to establish Jio as a global technology provider rather than a network builder, with the company targeting 10 to 15 international partners.
While Jio aims to help U.S. cable companies mitigate losses to fiber and fixed wireless providers, its international expansion has faced hurdles. Previous negotiations with South Africa's MTN Group collapsed following disagreements over licensing terms and valuation. The company recently completed a $3.2 billion IPO in Mumbai as it pursues this technology-led growth strategy.
