Italy Deploys Military to Milan Amid Foreign Influence Probe
The Italian government is investigating Russian influence in violent cost-of-living protests and has deployed 500 military personnel to Milan.
The Government of Italy is investigating whether foreign actors, specifically Russia, influenced violent cost-of-living protests that occurred over the weekend in Milan and other European cities. The demonstrations involved looting and arson, leading Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to request briefings on the role of foreign provocateurs.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto characterized the unrest as hybrid warfare conducted through social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. Crosetto stated that some participants as young as 11 or 12 appeared to have undergone counter-education, suggesting that unconventional tools are being used to destabilize Western countries.
In response to the violence and the threat of further demonstrations, the government announced the deployment of 500 military personnel in Milan through the end of the year. Critics of the administration argue that the government is leveraging the unrest for political gain ahead of next year's general election instead of addressing the underlying economic issues.
