Labor and Coalition Clash Over Using Superannuation for Housing

Shadow Housing Minister Andrew Bragg has proposed a national conversation on allowing Australians to use superannuation to increase home ownership. His suggestions include using super balances as collateral for loans, utilizing them as offsets, or withdrawing lump sums for house deposits and mortgage repayments to prevent Australia from becoming a nation of retired renters.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor clarified that these ideas are not currently official Coalition policy. However, a DemosAU poll indicates 60 percent of eligible voters support using retirement savings for home purchases. This debate coincides with a One Nation proposal to allow workers to redirect 3 percent of compulsory super contributions into take-home pay for three years to assist with rent or mortgages.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers condemned the proposals, accusing the Coalition and One Nation of attempting to vandalise the retirement savings scheme and warning that such moves would be devastating for retirement incomes. Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino added that these proposals would reduce economic security for workers and put pressure on the national budget. Labor has declared the next election will be a referendum on superannuation.

Critics outside of government, including Super Members Council CEO Misha Schubert, argue that raiding superannuation risks pushing up house prices and rents. Schubert maintains that the government should instead focus on significantly boosting housing supply to improve affordability.
