Berkshire Hathaway accumulated nearly a 10% stake in homebuilder Lennar, purchasing almost 2.7 million Class A shares over three trading days ending Monday. This investment brings the conglomerate's total position to 23.7 million Class A shares valued at $1.8 billion, alongside 528,000 Class B shares.
Lennar shares rose as much as 6.6% on Tuesday following the disclosure. The investment occurs as the homebuilder struggles with affordability challenges and rising 30-year mortgage rates, which led to a fiscal third-quarter earnings miss and weak fourth-quarter guidance. Lennar CEO Stuart Millar noted that 7% mortgage rates constrain affordability and reduce the pool of qualified buyers.
The move aligns with Berkshire's value investment strategy and its existing housing market holdings, including Clayton Homes and Taylor Morrison. In a separate leadership transition, Howard Buffett has officially succeeded his father, Warren Buffett, as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway effective Friday.
