Illinois Representative Harry Benton Resigns Amid Sexual Harassment Probe

Harry Benton resigned from the Illinois House and withdrew his candidacy for the 97th District following a sexual harassment investigation.

Illinois State Representative Harry Benton resigned from the Illinois House and withdrew as the Democratic nominee for the 97th House District on July 5, 2026. The resignation followed an investigation by the legislative inspector general into allegations of sexual harassment.

House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch stripped Benton of committee assignments and removed him from the Democratic caucus in February. After receiving the final investigation report, Welch described the findings as "clear patterns of conduct" that were "outrageous, unethical, and unbecoming." Welch had previously threatened expulsion proceedings if Benton did not resign.

Benton cited the strain the matter placed on his family since February in his departure. Republican nominee Gabby Shanahan criticized the delayed announcement of the resignation and a lack of transparency regarding the investigation, stating that accountability is not just a press release.

Democratic Party chairs for Will and Kendall counties have 30 days to appoint a successor for the remainder of the term and until August 20 to nominate a candidate for the November ballot. The Will County Democratic Party Chair holds the weighted vote necessary to appoint the immediate replacement.
