Subaru Recalls 541,237 SUVs Over Incorrect Weight Rating Labels
Subaru of America is recalling over 541,000 SUVs due to incorrect axle weight labels that could lead to vehicle overloading and increased crash risks.
Subaru of America is recalling 541,237 Crosstrek, Forester, and Ascent SUVs because of certification labels that incorrectly state the gross axle weight rating (GAWR). The recall follows an internal review and a May alert from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The labeling error means affected vehicles do not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards.
The recall includes 384,407 Ascent models from 2019-2026, 127,450 Forester and Forester Hybrid models from 2025-2026, and 29,380 Crosstrek Hybrid models from 2026. Because the GAWR identifies the maximum weight each axle can support, inaccurate labels could lead drivers to unintentionally overload their vehicles, placing dangerous strain on tires and suspension.
No mechanical repairs are required for the fix. Subaru will provide corrective labels free of charge, either by mailing them directly to owners or providing them through authorized dealerships. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed starting August 25, with further correspondence to follow once the remedies are available. Subaru reports no known crashes or injuries in the United States resulting from this issue.
