Robinhood Markets Inc. Launches Private Market Fund for Retail Investors

Robinhood Markets Inc. launched a closed-end fund on the New York Stock Exchange designed to provide retail investors with access to private markets and early-stage companies. The move aims to democratize exposure to assets typically reserved for institutional or accredited investors.

Venture capital professional Ann Berry criticized the launch, citing the inherent illiquidity and lack of valuation transparency in private companies. Berry argued that retail investors cannot perform adequate due diligence on these underlying assets and lack the specialized networks and pattern recognition required for successful venture capital investing.

Berry warned that the structure of these publicly traded private funds requires a high level of trust in fund managers, which she claims creates significant risk for the retail investor class.
