Florida Governor and Senate Races Tighten Ahead of Election
A University of North Florida poll shows narrowing Republican leads in Florida's governor and U.S. Senate races as the November 3 election approaches.
A poll conducted by the University of North Florida between October 12 and 19 indicates tightening contests for governor and U.S. Senate in Florida. Republican Byron Donalds leads Democrat David Jolly 49% to 47% for governor, a margin within the 2.81 percentage point margin of error. In the U.S. Senate race, Republican Ashley Moody leads Democrat Angie Nixon 49% to 45%.
Both Republican leads have narrowed since July. Independent voters currently favor the Democratic candidates in both races, with Jolly leading by 16 points and Nixon leading by 15 points. Political science professor Sean Freeder attributed the increased competitiveness to national political dynamics and the tendency for the president's party to suffer during midterm elections.
The poll also tracked voter priorities and ballot measures. Sixty-one percent of respondents prioritize environmental protection over economic growth. Additionally, Amendment 3, a property tax proposal requiring a 60% threshold to pass, currently holds 50% support.
