Somali Security Forces Demolish Homes in Mogadishu Clashes

Federal security forces in the Yaqshid district of Mogadishu launched a midnight operation on August 23, 2026, to demolish homes in the Tookiyo neighborhood. The Federal Government of Somalia claims the operation was necessary to reclaim state-owned land, but the move triggered violent clashes with local residents who claim decades of occupancy.

Nearly ten people were injured during the confrontation. While some local reports claim there were fatalities, official casualty figures have not been released. A social media video reportedly shows a security officer firing toward a civilian. During the operation, Turkish F-16 aircraft flew low over the affected areas, though neither Turkey nor the Somali government has linked the flights to the evictions.

Former presidents Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed condemned the operation, citing the forced displacement of hundreds of families. Residents expressed fear that demolitions could extend to Suuq Bacaad, a major food distribution hub. The operation follows a May 2026 order from the Banadir Regional Administration to temporarily halt all demolitions and evictions in the capital.
