Norway Leads Operation Legio to Train Ukrainian Soldiers in Poland

Norway is leading Operation Legio, an international training and equipping initiative supported by 11 nations to assist Ukrainian soldiers in their war against Russia. The program is centered at Camp Jomsborg, a purpose-built facility in southeastern Poland.

Instruction is led by the Telemark Battalion, an elite unit of the Norwegian Army. The curriculum integrates standard NATO warfighting practices with a Viking mentality, which is intended to help soldiers survive and thrive in harsh environments. The training operates as a bidirectional exchange, allowing the real-world combat experience of Ukrainian troops to inform the instructors and the overall program design.

Officials state the primary goal of the operation is to increase the lethality and survivability of Ukrainian soldiers. This capability is intended to ensure Ukraine can either achieve a military victory or negotiate peace on its own terms.
