Diageo Reports Unexpected Sales Growth Amid Turnaround Plan
Diageo reported a 0.6% rise in organic net sales for the first quarter, defying analyst expectations of a decline.
The spirits maker Diageo reported an unexpected 0.6% rise in organic net sales for the first quarter ending September 30, surpassing analyst predictions of a 0.4% decline. The results provide early momentum for a turnaround plan led by CEO Dave Lewis, which aims to save $1 billion over three years through the elimination of thousands of jobs.
Performance in North America remained a challenge with a 3.6% sales drop, though this was less severe than the 6.7% decline analysts had forecasted. Growth in Guinness beer and canned cocktails like Smirnoff Ice helped offset double-digit declines in Crown Royal whisky and tequila brands.
As part of an effort to streamline operations, the company sold its majority stake in East African Breweries to Asahi Group Holdings. Dave Lewis stated that the results "represent a small step in the right direction," while warning that geopolitical turbulence and market volatility persist, noting that full recovery in North America may take years.
