Canada Invests C$20 Million to Modernize Mercer Peace River Mill

The Government of Canada provided C$20 million to Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. to modernize operations and protect jobs amid a trade conflict with the United States.

The Government of Canada committed C$20 million in financial support to Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd., a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., to modernize its facility in northern Alberta. Announced by Minister Eleanor Olszewski, the funding consists of a C$1 million non-repayable contribution and a C$19 million repayable contribution that begins repayment in 2031.

Administered through Prairies Economic Development Canada under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative, the capital is designated for productivity improvements, expanded bio-energy production, and carbon capture and storage. Minister Olszewski stated the investment is intended to protect regional jobs and support businesses facing pressure from an ongoing trade conflict with the United States.

Juan Carlos Bueno, President and CEO of Mercer International Inc., noted that the investment is a step toward the continued modernization of the mill and supports its role within the forest products economy of northern Alberta.
