China and SpaceX Race to Build Orbital AI Data Centers
China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and SpaceX are competing to deploy solar-powered AI data centers in orbit to reduce computing costs and energy demands.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and Elon Musk's SpaceX are competing to establish industrial-scale artificial intelligence data centers in orbit. CASC plans to build a Space Cloud by 2030 using gigawatt-class solar-powered hubs to move energy-intensive AI processing into space. This initiative is a core pillar of the Government of China's 15th Five Year Plan, supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' new School of Interstellar Navigation.
Elon Musk intends to deploy solar-powered orbital AI satellites within three years to support high-computing demands for systems such as xAI's Grok. Musk is pursuing a potential merger between SpaceX and xAI, alongside a planned $25 billion SpaceX IPO, to fund the development. He asserts that space will become the lowest-cost location for AI due to constant solar energy and the lack of traditional cooling requirements.
Other industry players are advancing similar goals. Blue Origin is developing gigawatt-scale orbital centers, Alphabet Inc. is working on a 2027 prototype launch via Project Suncatcher, and Starcloud has already launched a proof-of-concept satellite equipped with an Nvidia H100 chip. While China seeks strategic dominance, CASC continues to trail SpaceX in the development of reusable rocket technology.
