Alaska Reports Low Rural Turnout Ahead of Primary Elections

The Alaska Division of Elections has received more than 24,000 early and absentee ballots ahead of Tuesday's primary elections for governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House. Data reveals a sharp divide in participation, with urban areas such as Juneau and Anchorage reporting early voting rates above 7%, while rural Alaska Native communities report less than 1% participation.

Alaska Native leaders and critics attribute these disparities to systemic issues, including staffing shortages and inconsistent opening hours in remote regions. Representative Robyn Niayuq Frier noted that some rural poll workers resigned because of delayed compensation for mandatory training. These challenges follow a decision by Governor Mike Dunleavy to veto a bill that would have created a rural voting coordinator and permitted voters to correct minor errors on absentee ballots.

In the gubernatorial race, Democratic candidates Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and Tom Begich have discussed the possibility of one withdrawing from the contest if both candidates place in the top four of the primary.
