Bull CEO Identifies Memory Gap in European Supercomputing

Emmanuel Le Roux warns that memory remains the final critical gap in Europe's supercomputing supply chain despite increased local sourcing of other components.

The CEO of French supercomputer manufacturer Bull, Emmanuel Le Roux, identified memory as the primary remaining weakness in the European supercomputing supply chain. Speaking from the company's factory in Angers, Le Roux stated that "the problem is memory," noting that while Bull has increased its local sourcing of components to approximately 70% from 20-30% five years ago, memory is the last major component without a European supplier.

Le Roux acknowledged progress in the development of European processors through entities such as SiPearl, Vsora, and Openchip. However, he warned that no immediate solutions for memory are appearing, stating, "We don’t see anything coming." Currently, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron control over 90% of the global memory market.

Rising memory prices have become a significant industry concern. While European memory initiatives exist, Le Roux noted they would require a long time to establish, leaving the region dependent on non-European providers for these critical components.
