Israeli Navy Invests $780 Million in Autonomous Fleet Expansion

The Israeli Navy is shifting its military focus toward maritime defense by expanding its fleet and investing in autonomous technology to protect critical trade routes and offshore economic infrastructure. This strategic pivot follows increased attacks on shipping and gas fields by Iran and its proxies, including the Houthis, as well as naval failures to prevent Hamas landings on October 7, 2023.

To modernize its capabilities, the Israel Ministry of Defense announced a $780 million order for five new missile ships in 2024 to replace aging vessels. The navy is also deploying unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) to counter low-cost threats such as sea mines and drones. This includes the use of the Seagull autonomous vessel, developed by Elbit Systems, for long-term patrol and counter-mine operations.

Yaron Sarig, head of the AI and Autonomy Program Executive Office, confirmed the increased investment in sea drones. These efforts aim to secure Israel's island economy and address the inability to break the Houthi blockade in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, while mitigating risks from Iranian mine-laying in the Strait of Hormuz.
