New York City Mayor Pressures Amazon Over Labor and Environmental Laws

Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, is leading a regulatory and legislative campaign against Amazon involving labor rights, environmental violations, and vehicle safety. A central component of this effort is the Delivery Protection Act, introduced by City Council member Tiffany Cabán. The proposed law would require warehouse operators to obtain city licenses and directly hire couriers who are currently employed through third-party firms.

Amazon has opposed the measure, warning that it could risk over 5,000 jobs and threatening to relocate its warehouses. The company has contributed $5 million to the Five Borough Jobs Campaign to fight the legislation. Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su stated the city is focused on increasing worker pay and sending a clear message to companies that break the law.

Beyond labor disputes, the city is penalizing Amazon for environmental and safety infractions. Mayor Mamdani announced the collection of over $9 million in idling fines from Amazon delivery vehicles, with Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Lisa F. Garcia identifying the company as one of the city's worst idling offenders. Additionally, the city issued cease-and-desist orders to Amazon regarding the sale of illegal e-bikes. Amazon maintains its e-bikes meet safety standards and claims it is working with officials to resolve the idling violations.
