USS Theodore Roosevelt Deploys to Middle East Amid Fleet Shortage

The United States Navy deployed the USS Theodore Roosevelt from San Diego on Sunday for a mission to the Middle East. The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, flagship of Carrier Strike Group 9, is relieving the USS George Washington, which had been temporarily dispatched to the U.S. Central Command region to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Navy leadership warned that the Roosevelt's mission may exceed normal durations due to a shortage of available ships. This follows the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, which remained at sea for approximately 10.5 months to support a conflict with Iran and a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. That tour was marked by severe crew stress, including eight suicide attempts and 265 consecutive days without a port call. To mitigate similar crises, the Navy equipped the Roosevelt with enhanced entertainment and extra supplies.

The deployment occurs as the U.S. maintains a naval blockade in the Arabian Sea, redirecting 122 commercial vessels since July. The USS George Washington must return to the western Pacific to satisfy defense policies requiring a constant carrier presence in that region. A 2025 Government Accountability Office report attributed these systemic deployment issues to a failure to increase fleet size over 20 years, citing design flaws and insufficient shipyard capacity.
