Chan Chun Sing Outlines Five Priorities to Combat National Complacency

Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing warned on August 3, 2026, that complacency could dull the nation's ability to respond to emerging threats and geopolitical volatility. Speaking at the 18th ASEAN & Asia Forum, he characterized Singapore's 61 years of independence as an aberration and urged citizens not to assume the country will always have a rightful place in the sun regardless of external circumstances.

Chan detailed five national priorities to ensure continued stability: staying out of trouble, maintaining policy consistency to protect investor confidence, remaining globally open and connected, building irreplaceable capabilities, and diversifying supply chains. He argued that the state must proactively seek new competitive advantages rather than treating geopolitics as a passive backdrop.

Regarding the regional economy, Chan identified energy, finance, and data as the commanding heights for ASEAN. He further emphasized the importance of maintaining a dependable, long-term relationship with the United States as a critical stakeholder in regional security.
