Fiji Launches Five-Year Plan for International Carbon Trade

The Government of Fiji launched a FJD$5.2 million plan to establish frameworks for its first international carbon trade by 2030.

The Government of Fiji launched the Five-Year Costed Carbon Market Plan 2026–2030 during the opening day of the Pacific Pre-COP31 in Nadi. The FJD$5.2 million (US$2.6 million) initiative aims to build the systems and frameworks required for the nation to execute its first international carbon trade by 2030.

Developed by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry and Conservation International, the plan targets climate finance for sustainable forestry, renewable energy, waste management, and the protection of forests and mangroves. The government has called on development partners to assist in implementing the framework.

Minister Mosese Bulitavu stated that the market must provide benefits beyond carbon trading. He emphasized that the initiative must deliver real climate action and unlock sustainable finance that reaches resource owners and local communities.
