Vistra Expands Power Capacity to Meet AI Energy Demand
Vistra Corp is acquiring Cogentrix and securing nuclear power deals with Meta and Amazon to support growing electricity needs from AI and data centers.
Vistra Corp is expanding its power-generating capacity to meet rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence workloads, data center expansion, electric vehicles, and manufacturing. The company currently manages over 44 gigawatts of capacity and is pursuing the acquisition of Cogentrix to add approximately 5.5 gigawatts of natural gas generation assets to its portfolio.
To secure long-term revenue, the company has entered into nuclear power purchase agreements with hyperscalers Meta Platforms and Amazon Web Services, including a deal with Meta for over 2.6 gigawatts of power. Vistra projects annual load growth of 5% to 6% in the Texas power market and 2% to 3% in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions through 2030.
Despite reporting a first-quarter adjusted operating profit of $1.5 billion, the company faces operational headwinds. These include volatile weather patterns in Texas, regulatory changes, and delays in grid connections.
