Romania Narrows Budget Deficit to 2.89% of GDP

The Government of Romania reduced its general consolidated budget deficit to RON 59.42 billion (EUR 11.27 billion) between January and August 2026. This figure represents 2.89% of the country's GDP, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance.

This represents a 31% year-on-year shrinkage compared to the same period in 2025, when the deficit stood at RON 86.36 billion. The current decrease totals RON 26.94 billion.

State authorities aim to conclude the current year with a deficit of 6.2% of GDP. This target continues a multi-year downward trend, following a 7.6% deficit in 2025 and a deficit of nearly 8.7% in 2024.
