Linda Kasonde Petitions Court to Nullify Hichilema Election Win

Linda Kasonde and the LCK Freedom Foundation petitioned the Constitutional Court of Zambia to nullify President-elect Hakainde Hichilema's reelection victory.

Activist Linda Kasonde and the LCK Freedom Foundation have petitioned the Constitutional Court of Zambia to nullify the reelection of President-elect Hakainde Hichilema. Hichilema won the August 13 election with nearly 61% of the vote, but petitioners allege the process was not free and fair. The challenge cites corruption, inflated vote totals for the incumbent, and restrictions placed on opposition campaigning.

The petition was submitted electronically after police sealed off the court complex for security reasons. Civil society groups claim this security measure deprived citizens of their constitutional rights. Chief Justice Mumba Malila acknowledged receiving the documents via his private email, describing the submission method as "highly irregular," but he referred the matter to the Constitutional Court for consideration.

A spokesperson for Hichilema stated that the courts must decide on the procedural and substantive merits of the challenge.
