UK Government Introduces Budget with Housing and Energy Relief
The United Kingdom government launched a new budget featuring a low-deposit home scheme, energy payments for households, and tax relief for businesses.
The Government of the United Kingdom introduced a new budget focused on housing accessibility, energy cost reduction, and business support. A central component of the plan is the Your First Home scheme, which enables buyers of new-build properties to purchase homes with a 2.5% deposit through interest-free equity loans.
To address rising living costs, the government announced a £100 energy payment for households in council tax band D. It also committed to scrapping standing charges on gas bills, although this measure will not be implemented until the spring. For the business sector, the chancellor cancelled a scheduled fuel duty increase and raised the business rate threshold from £12,000 to £18,000.
Additional social measures include the expansion of free breakfast clubs to 2,000 more schools and the creation of paternity pay for self-employed workers. Despite these initiatives, citizens continue to report financial pressure caused by frozen income tax thresholds, increasing mortgage payments, and a disparity between Local Housing Allowance rates and actual rental costs.
