Palm Oil Glut Lowers Prices for Indian Importers
India and other major importers are shifting toward palm oil as a global glut and Black Sea disruptions make it cheaper than soybean and sunflower oils.
A global glut of palm oil is increasing the crop's attractiveness to major importers, particularly in India, as the price gap between palm oil and competing vegetable oils widens. Palm oil currently trades at a discount of approximately $300 per ton compared to sunflower oil and $100 per ton compared to soybean oil.
Patanjali Foods, one of India's top vegetable oil buyers, identified this widening price disparity. The market shift is driven by strong production levels in Malaysia and significant disruptions to sunflower oil shipments from Russia and Ukraine following attacks in the Black Sea.
These conditions have positioned palm oil as a more cost-effective alternative for buyers in India and other global markets, who are leveraging the supply surplus to reduce import costs.
