APC Demands Atiku Abubakar Withdraw From 2027 Presidential Race

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has demanded that African Democratic Congress candidate Atiku Abubakar withdraw from the 2027 presidential race. The call follows findings from an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration tribunal in Paris concerning the stalled Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Taraba State.

The APC alleges that Abubakar, while serving as Vice-President in 2003, collaborated with former Power Minister Olu Agunloye to illegally award a build-operate-transfer contract to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Ltd. This action reportedly occurred despite objections from then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Central to the controversy is a $500,000 payment made by Sunrise promoter Leno Adesanya to Jennifer Douglas, Abubakar's former wife, through an offshore account. Although the ICC tribunal identified a close connection in time between the payment and the contract award, it did not formally conclude that Abubakar received a bribe. Abubakar has previously denied any wrongdoing, while the APC maintains the revelations prove he is unfit for office.
