CNN Apologizes After Citing Parody X Account as Congressman

CNN issued an apology after mistakenly citing a satirical X account posing as a congressman during a segment on Senator Mitch McConnell's health.

Cable News Network, Inc. issued an apology on July 9, 2026, after the network mistakenly used a parody X account as a source during a news broadcast. The error occurred during a July 8 episode of CNN This Morning, where host Audie Cornish presented a graphic featuring quotes from individuals who had reportedly spoken with the hospitalized Senator Mitch McConnell.

One of the quotes in the graphic was attributed to Rep. Jack Kimble, a fictional satirical character rather than a member of Congress. The cited post falsely claimed that Kimble and McConnell had spoken for nearly 45 minutes. Following the broadcast, Cornish admitted the network should not have used the quote and expressed regret for the mistake.

The operator of the parody account responded to the citation by claiming the error exposed the network's bias.
