Kano House of Assembly Suspends Three Local Government Chairmen

The Kano State House of Assembly suspended the executive chairmen of Bebeji, Rogo, and Bagwai Local Government Areas for three months on August 4, 2026. The decision followed a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, presented by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala, which was based on petitions from legislative councils and concerned citizens.

Lawmakers accused the officials of corruption, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office. Specific allegations include the diversion of funds intended for developmental projects and rural electrification in Bagwai, procurement irregularities and the improper sale of land in Bebeji, and the undermining of government welfare policies in Rogo.

The Assembly invoked Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to justify the oversight action. This measure aims to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into administrative irregularities while safeguarding public resources. The suspended officials are Dr. Alhassan Salisu, Abubakar Mustapha, and Bello Gadanya.

Vice chairmen will lead the affected councils until the investigation concludes. The Assembly has directed the Kano State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to implement the resolution.
