Reserve Bank of India Maintains Rates as Inflation Pressures Mute

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra kept interest rates unchanged and signaled confidence in the economy, while the government expanded LIC share sales.

The Reserve Bank of India maintained current interest rates on Wednesday, a move that led traders to reduce expectations for an October rate hike. Market odds for an October increase fell to approximately 60%, with participants now pricing in a potential hike by December.

Governor Sanjay Malhotra expressed confidence in the local economy, stating that "underlying inflation pressures are muted". He also ruled out an early closure of the diaspora deposit program, noting that robust inflows continue to support the rupee.

In a separate fiscal action, the Government of India expanded its offer for sale of Life Insurance Corporation of India shares from 2.5% to 6.5%. This decision followed strong institutional demand for the shares, although retail investor response remained lukewarm.
