Coal India Shares Surge as Supplies Rise and Subsidiary Files IPO

Coal India shares rose over 4% after reporting increased August coal supplies and filing for an initial public offering of subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited.

Shares of Coal India Limited surged over 4% on September 2, 2026, defying a broader market decline. The rally followed a business update showing a 5.5% increase in total coal supplies for August, which reached 60.60 million tonnes compared to 57.40 million tonnes the previous year. This growth spanned both the power sector, which rose 4.5% to 48.46 million tonnes, and the non-regulated sector, which grew 9.6% to 12.12 million tonnes.

For the first five months of FY27, total supplies reached 322.90 million tonnes, representing a 6.7% increase. The company reported that these higher supplies allowed it to liquidate approximately 55 million tonnes of pithead coal stocks during this period. Coal India currently maintains roughly 76 million tonnes of coal at its pitheads to support power generation requirements.

In a separate strategic move, Coal India filed a draft red herring prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India, BSE, and NSE for an initial public offering of its wholly owned subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. The proposed offering involves the sale of up to 661,836,300 equity shares. The company is now preparing to ramp up production and supplies as rainy spells recede.
