Honda Pursues Cautious Autonomous Strategy Amid Tesla CyberCab Launch
Honda is adopting a conservative approach to fully autonomous vehicles while Tesla deploys steering-wheel-less CyberCabs in Austin, Texas.
Honda is pursuing fully autonomous vehicle technology through a cautious development strategy that prioritizes controlled environments and conservative deployment. Jay Joseph, CEO of Honda Australia, noted that while some competitors hold an advantage through extensive real-world data, Honda remains competitive following its 2021 commercialization of a Level 3 autonomous driving system in Japan.
This approach contrasts with the aggressive strategy of Tesla, which has deployed a fleet of steering-wheel-less autonomous taxis known as CyberCabs in Austin, Texas. Although Tesla intends to expand the service nationwide, early users have reported problems with inaccurate passenger drop-offs and inefficient routing.
Other industry players, including Waymo, have operated autonomous services in American cities since 2020. Waymo utilizes a sensor suite combining radar, cameras, and LIDAR to navigate urban environments.
