New Zealand Voter Enrolment Deadline Set for October 25
The Electoral Commission is urging citizens to register by Sunday midnight following new rules that ban election-day enrolment for the November 7 election.
The deadline for citizens to enrol for the November 7 election is midnight on Sunday, October 25. Under updated regulations, eligible voters can no longer register on election day and must be enrolled at least 13 days before the vote.
The Electoral Commission is operating hubs and conducting in-person events across the country to assist with registration. These efforts come amid concerns that the shift in deadlines could reduce turnout among younger voters. The commission noted that while the electoral roll is used for jury selection and research by the Ministry of Justice and Stats NZ, personal contact details like phone numbers and email addresses are not released to the public.
Under the Electoral Act 1993, enrolment is compulsory, though voting remains a right rather than a legal requirement. While failing to knowingly or wilfully apply to enrol is an offence that carries a penalty, the commission and legal experts state that prosecutions are virtually non-existent.
