New Zealand Unemployment Hits 11-Year High at 5.6%

New Zealand reported its highest unemployment rate since 2015 as global energy shocks and geopolitical instability strain the national economy ahead of November elections.

New Zealand's unemployment rate climbed to 5.6% in the second quarter, marking the highest level since the third quarter of 2015. According to Statistics New Zealand, the figure surpassed the median economist estimate of 5.4%.

Statistics New Zealand attributed the rise to a fragile economic recovery hampered by geopolitical instability, specifically the US-Iran war, and a global energy shock that reduced company profits. Despite the rise in jobless claims, the labor force participation rate unexpectedly rose to 70.7%, and overall employment increased by 0.5%.

To combat accompanying inflationary pressures, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand raised the Official Cash Rate to 2.5% in July, with additional increases anticipated. These economic headwinds coincide with a period of political uncertainty for the center-right coalition government led by the National Party, which is trailing in opinion polls ahead of the general election in early November.
