SpaceX Prioritizes Starlink Launches Over Commercial Payloads

SpaceX is favoring its Starlink satellite network over third-party customers, prompting Rocket Lab USA Inc. to acquire Iridium Communications Inc. to secure independent launch access.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is increasingly prioritizing its internal Starlink satellite missions over commercial payloads, leaving rival spacecraft companies unable to secure Falcon 9 launch dates until 2028 or 2029. Starlink's share of SpaceX missions grew from 54% in 2020 to approximately 79% in 2026, driven by higher projected revenues and plans to deploy up to 1 million orbital AI data centers using the Starship rocket.

Capacity for third-party customers is further constrained by SpaceX's transition to Starship and its contractual obligations to NASA to provide a moon lander by 2028. While other competitors like Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance have experienced technical failures and groundings, Rocket Lab USA Inc. is attempting to capture the resulting market gap.

Rocket Lab USA Inc. is developing the Neutron rocket and has acquired Iridium Communications Inc. for $8 billion to integrate launch and satellite services. This move aims to ensure launch access for its clients and create a more cost-effective business model that provides merchant components and systems to the broader industry.
