Canada Pledges $51 Million for Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid and Elections

The Canadian federal Liberal government announced $51 million in new aid and reconstruction funding for Ukraine on April 3, 2026. This funding, drawn from a broader 2025 budget fund, allocates $32 million to humanitarian aid through the World Food Programme, the United Nations Refugee Agency, and the Red Cross.

Randeep Sarai, the Secretary of State for International Development, detailed the package after visiting Poland and Ukraine and meeting with cabinet ministers, including First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The remaining funds include $6 million for voter education and election preparation, $5 million for UN Women to support Ukraine's European Union membership requirements, and $5 million for veteran reintegration programs based on Canada's experience in Afghanistan.

Canada has provided nearly $26 billion in support since the 2022 Russian invasion. During his visit, Sarai highlighted the logistical challenges of organizing democratic processes during an active conflict, noting the difficulty of establishing polling stations amidst landmines and integrating displaced citizens living abroad.
