Elections Alberta Rejects Thousands of Referendum Special Ballots

Elections Alberta is invalidating thousands of mail-in ballots due to errors as the province prepares for an October 19 referendum on independence and immigration.

The provincial election agency Elections Alberta has rejected thousands of special ballots ahead of the October 19 referendum. While initial reports indicated 5,700 rejections due to eligibility or information errors, the agency later specified that more than 3,000 of those invalidations were caused specifically by missing declaration forms and identification issues. Officials noted that voters still have time to submit corrected information via email.

The referendum features 10 questions covering immigration, the Canadian constitution, and whether Alberta should initiate a process to leave Confederation. To secure the vote, the agency requires mail-in applicants to match registration data exactly and provide authorized ID. Accepted ballots are stored in a video-monitored facility in Edmonton and overseen by political party scrutineers. To date, the agency has verified approximately one-third of the 652,000 ballot packages sent and has hired over two-thirds of the 60,000 required staff members.

In response to the complexity of the ballot, community organizations and academics are hosting information sessions. Groups including the Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens' Association and Filipinos Rising are providing translation services and forums to assist seniors and immigrant communities. Advance voting is scheduled to run from October 13 through October 17.
