Air Force Renames Joint Base Charleston for Lindsey Graham

The United States Air Force is renaming Joint Base Charleston to Joint Base Lindsey Graham to honor the late South Carolina senator and Air Force Colonel. Troy Meink, the Secretary of the Air Force, issued a July 27 memo directing the process, citing Graham's lifelong devotion to the military and his success in securing hundreds of millions of dollars for base infrastructure, including $212 million for Coast Guard and medical facilities.

Senator Graham died of an aortic dissection on July 11 at age 71. His career included service as a Colonel in the Air Force Reserves from 1984 to 2015 and tenure in the South Carolina House, the U.S. House, and the U.S. Senate. He is scheduled for burial this Wednesday in Pickens County, South Carolina, following memorial services in Washington, D.C., attended by President Donald Trump.

The decision drew praise from South Carolina Republicans, including U.S. Representative Nancy Mace and Attorney General Alan Wilson, who called the move a fitting tribute. However, Democratic state Senator Ed Sutton criticized the approach, arguing that renaming the entire installation without local input was incorrect and suggesting that a specific Coast Guard facility would be a more appropriate alternative. Base spokespeople have not yet released specific transition details.
