North Carolina Republicans Call Special Session Over Fuel Prices

Republican leaders in North Carolina are convening a special legislative session to provide fuel price relief one month before midterm elections.

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall and Senate Pro Tempore Phil Berger announced plans to convene a special session of the General Assembly to address skyrocketing gas and diesel prices. The Republican leaders intend to provide immediate relief for families and farmers who have faced rising costs since February, a trend linked to military attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel.

While a specific mechanism for relief has not been finalized, one proposed option involves the suspension of all or part of the state's 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax, which currently funds road construction and maintenance.

Democratic leaders criticized the move as a political maneuver ahead of the midterm elections. House Democratic Leader Robert Reives and Senate Leader Sydney Batch characterized the proposal as a sign of desperation and a distraction from the Republican party's record over sixteen years of state control. Batch described the initiative as a day late and a dollar short, arguing that families have suffered from rising prices for months due to failed leadership.
