Justice Department Reviews Watergate Prosecutor Misconduct Allegations
The United States Department of Justice is conducting a preliminary review into whether Watergate-era special prosecutors committed misconduct against Richard Nixon.
The United States Department of Justice is conducting a preliminary review to determine if the special prosecutor's office that investigated the Watergate break-in committed misconduct. The review follows a two-hour presentation at DOJ headquarters by Watergate historian Geoff Shepard, who argued that the deep state targeted former President Richard Nixon through lawfare.
Shepard alleges that special prosecutors Archibald Cox and Leon Jaworski violated due process rights by meeting secretly with judges and suppressing evidence. While the Biden administration rejected similar requests in 2022, current officials invited Shepard to present his findings to the Office of Professional Responsibility. A Justice Department spokeswoman clarified that the presentation does not constitute a formal investigation.
The review coincides with renewed Republican interest in Nixon's legacy. Vice President JD Vance has explicitly drawn parallels between the investigations into Nixon and those targeting Donald Trump, suggesting that the same institutional groups are involved in both cases.
