TMC Faces Internal Rebellion After BJP Landslide Victory

The All India Trinamool Congress is grappling with internal instability and public dissent following a landslide defeat in the May 4, 2026, West Bengal Assembly elections. While party chief Mamata Banerjee convened a strategy meeting in Kolkata with nearly 70 legislators to discuss the appointment of a Leader of the Opposition and a fact-finding committee on party worker attacks, the organization is facing a wave of internal rebellion.

Multiple leaders have publicly blamed the party leadership for the loss. Former minister Manoj Tiwary accused the government of corruption and claimed senior minister Aroop Biswas blocked development projects. Other veterans attributed the decline to the management style of Abhishek Banerjee. MP Dev further distanced himself from the party by congratulating the victorious Bharatiya Janata Party and urging the new government to protect artistic freedom.

The aftermath of the election has been marked by unusual violence. While the TMC leadership accused the BJP of intimidation, some reports indicate the winning party has been the primary target, including the murder of Chandranath Rath, secretary to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Additionally, some TMC members, such as spokesperson Riju Dutta, claim they are being hounded by their own party.

The TMC has officially distanced itself from the internal criticisms, stating that such remarks represent personal views. Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari announced that the new administration intends to reopen all files on poll violence to ensure justice for victims.
