China Hits Record 1 Million Monthly Vehicle Exports

China exported over 1 million vehicles in June 2026, driving a record trade surplus while pressuring European manufacturers like Volkswagen.

China achieved a historic milestone in June 2026, exporting 1.037 million vehicles for the first time. This represents a 75.1% increase over June 2025, with new energy vehicles accounting for 523,000 of those units. Total exports for the first half of the year reached 5.096 million, placing the country at 69% of the annual target set by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

The Government of China reports that the surge in automotive shipments, alongside high demand for AI-related integrated circuits, is pushing the country toward a record trade surplus of $1 trillion. Growth has been particularly strong in Central and South America, where BYD dominates, and in Europe, where Chery is the leading exporter. However, shifting trade policies and tariffs have created pressure in North American and Middle Eastern markets.

Industry analysts attribute this export spike to double-digit sales declines in China's domestic market, sparking fears of a second "China shock." This overflow of capacity has significantly impacted European manufacturers. Volkswagen Group is planning to reduce its workforce by up to 100,000 employees as the European Union faces a goods surplus of approximately €900 million per day.
