Indian Army Chief Warns Pakistan Over Terrorism Support

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi warned Pakistan must decide if it wants to remain part of geography or history if it continues harboring terrorists.

Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi warned Pakistan on May 16, 2026, that the country must decide whether it wants to remain "part of geography or history" if it continues to harbor terrorists and operate against India. Speaking at the 'Sena Samwad' interactive session at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, Dwivedi linked his warning to the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor. This 2025 military campaign was launched in retaliation for a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. During the 88-hour conflict, Indian forces conducted precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with officials noting that 13 aircraft were shot down and 11 airfields were targeted.

In the same address, Dwivedi detailed the Indian Army's transition toward data-centric and networked operations for 2026-27, emphasizing indigenization and the expansion of military domains into cyber, space, and cognitive warfare.

The Pakistan Army, through its Inter-Services Public Relations wing, strongly condemned the remarks as "warmongering" and a sign of "cognitive bankruptcy." Pakistan's military asserted its status as a responsible nuclear power and warned that attempting to obliterate a nuclear neighbor would result in mutual and comprehensive destruction. While Pakistan's foreign office expressed a willingness to resume dialogue, India maintains that terrorism and diplomatic talks cannot coexist.
