China and Kenya Pledge Expanded Defense and Security Cooperation

China and Kenya pledged to deepen military and security cooperation during celebrations in Nairobi on July 21 and 22, 2026, marking the 99th anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). Guo Haiyan, the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, stated that Beijing is ready to expand partnerships in peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, maritime security, and emergency response to promote stability in the Horn of Africa. Guo defended China's military modernization as peaceful and defensive, advocating for multilateral cooperation over military blocs.

Representing Kenya, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces Lt Gen John Omenda reaffirmed Nairobi's commitment to strengthening defense ties. He highlighted the growth of bilateral relations through military diplomacy, training, logistical support, and humanitarian assistance. Both nations identified Kenya as a key regional security partner in efforts to address global instability.

The partnership has recently focused on Indian Ocean maritime security, evidenced by two Chinese naval escort task groups visiting the Port of Mombasa since October 2025. Chinese Defence Attache Senior Colonel Zhao Peng added that the PLA will continue supporting peacekeeping and anti-piracy operations as part of a shared future for the two nations.
