Amnesty International Demands Rights Restoration for Imran Khan

Amnesty International called on the government of Pakistan to unconditionally restore the human rights of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi Khan, on August 5, 2026. The demand comes as Khan's detention reaches its third anniversary. Acting Regional Director for South Asia Isabelle Lassee stated that authorities have systematically denied Khan a fair trial and subjected him to unlawful solitary confinement and limited medical care.

Both Imran and Bushra Bibi Khan have been denied regular access to legal counsel since December 2025, and Khan has been denied family visits for over eight months. Imran Khan is currently serving a 14-year sentence for corruption and a 17-year sentence related to state gifts, while Bushra Bibi Khan received seven and 17 years in the same respective cases.

Amnesty International and United Nations experts have characterized the detentions as arbitrary and politically motivated. Along with demanding an end to solitary confinement, the organization urged the government to protect the right to peaceful protest for supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party ahead of planned anniversary gatherings.
