Gretchen Whitmer Signs Animal Advocacy Bills in Michigan

Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, signed three animal advocacy bills designed to protect abused animals and reduce the time pets spend in shelters. Senate Bills 293 and 294 streamline the adoption process for animals removed from abusive or neglectful owners by eliminating lengthy prosecutorial and court delays.

Under the new laws, accused owners have two weeks to reclaim an animal before it becomes eligible for adoption. This replaces a previous system where animals often waited six months to a year for legal adoption.

Whitmer also signed a third bill that creates a fundraising license plate for homeless or abused animals. The revenue generated from these plates will fund spaying and neutering efforts, which are intended to lower shelter overcrowding and reduce financial burdens on animal care facilities.
