Tech Giants Deploy Zero-Water Cooling in Arizona Data Centers
Microsoft, Meta, and other tech firms are implementing zero-water cooling technologies to expand AI infrastructure amid severe water scarcity in Arizona.
Arizona is seeing a surge in AI-driven data centers and semiconductor factories despite severe groundwater depletion and the drying of the Colorado River. Hyperscale companies including Microsoft Corporation, Meta Platforms Inc., and Amazon, alongside Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, have established major operations in the Phoenix region to build out AI infrastructure.
To mitigate environmental impact, companies are shifting toward air-cooling and zero-water recycling technologies. Microsoft Corporation has committed to building only zero-water data centers in Arizona moving forward, noting that its existing water-cooled facilities in the state only consume water when temperatures exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Meta Platforms Inc. also employs zero-water systems based on local climate and power access.
Local governments in Phoenix, Mesa, and Avondale have implemented ordinances to cap industrial water use. In Buckeye, officials approved a $20 billion data center complex by Tract, requiring the developer to offset groundwater withdrawals by purchasing supplemental Colorado River water. While sustainability group Ceres warns that indirect water use at power plants could quadruple to 14.5 billion gallons annually, current data suggests direct industrial water consumption in Phoenix remains stable.
