Thousands March in Washington to Defend Voting Rights

Thousands of protesters gathered on the National Mall and at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 2026, for the Defend the Vote March on Washington. Organized by Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III, the rally occurred on the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington to pressure lawmakers to restore federal voting protections for minority voters.

The demonstration responded to a Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais and an April ruling that weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Organizers argue these decisions allowed Southern states to redraw congressional maps to reduce Black representation and undermined the ability to challenge discriminatory laws. Participants also protested the Trump administration's immigration policies and cuts to social programs.

Parallel to the rally, the NAACP and other civil rights organizations filed federal court claims against a presidential executive order restricting mail-in voting. This legal action follows a Supreme Court ruling that cleared the path for the order's implementation. The march involved a broad coalition, including the National Urban League and the American Federation of Teachers, calling for economic dignity and voting rights as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.
